Professional Interview FAQs

How can I book a professional interview?

First, you’ll need to apply for a Chartered grade of membership or request an upgrade if you’re already a CABE member.  Once you have paid the processing fee, the team will be in touch with guidance by email.  You can then contact the Peer Review team directly to book an interview – these cannot be booked online.

Should I wait until my submission is ready to book my interview?

We would recommend that you identify and book an interview date prior to submission. Interviews book up months in advance, so it is best that you book and then complete your submission, working towards the specific submission date that corresponds to the interview date you have chosen.

How long before an interview date is the submission date?

Submission dates fall around eight weeks prior to their corresponding interview date.

Where can I see the available Professional Interview dates?

You can see available dates here.

How do I know which route to Chartered Membership application I am eligible for?

Both routes will require a technical report submission – The relevant designation may be applied after you have been contacted by the Membership Team confirming that they have processed your Chartered Membership

Chartered Member (MCABE)
Academic Route – Level 6 qualification + two years’ experience
Experience Route – Five years’ experience

Chartered Building Engineer (C.Build E MCABE)
Academic Route – Level 7 qualification + three years’ relevant experience, two of which must be in a senior role
Experience Route – Six years’ relevant experience, two of which must be in a senior role.

What do I need to include in my submission?

You can find everything you need to include within the guidance notes on pages 2-4.

What should my technical report look like?

You can find examples of technical reports here.

Why do I need to complete a competency-based application form if I have already referenced the competencies throughout my report?

Throughout your technical report, you will have referenced where you believe you have met the CABE competencies; the application form is another opportunity to demonstrate this, whether it be examples from other memorable projects or through your day-to-day job.

The more opportunities you have to demonstrate that you meet the CABE competencies, the more the panel can form a fuller picture of you as a candidate.

How do I send my submission?

We no longer accept hard copy submissions. You should email your submission electronically to peerreview@cbuilde.com using a platform to transfer large files, such as OneDrive or WeTransfer.

What questions will I be asked in my Professional Interview?

There is no set bank of questions, but you can see what the panel will generally be looking for on page 5 of the guidance notes

What are the possible outcomes of a Professional Interview?

There are a few possible outcomes; these can be found on page 5 of the guidance notes. In each case, we will write to you electronically within two weeks to provide you with the panel’s feedback.

Can I appeal my Professional Interview decision?

We have a full Appeals Procedure in place; details will be sent if an applicant decides to appeal.

If I am successful at interview, what happens next?

You will be sent electronic confirmation and an invoice for the applicable/extra fee within two weeks of your interview. Once the fee is paid, the Membership Team will enrol/upgrade you and you will receive email confirmation. Your certificate/s will be posted to you, along with a letter.

If I am successful, which designation will I use?

If you were successfully awarded the Chartered Building Engineer grade, you will use the designation C.Build E MCABE

If you were successfully awarded the Chartered Member grade, you will use the designation MCABE
