CPD

All Members must upload their 35 hours of CPD by 31 December

Following feedback from members, we will be changing the CPD audit year, to sit with the calendar year.
Therefore, from January 2024 the CPD year will run from January to December.

This change will help you to keep a track of your activities and allow you to record them with ease via the online CPD portal located on the CABE Community.

Uploading CPD is easier than ever

You can log your CPD within your member profile on the CABE Community.
You can chose to upload individual activities or upload your year's CPD record in one go. Download the PDF guide.

How to bulk upload:

Keeping track of a year’s worth of CPD activities can be tricky, however using a CPD Record Template (link attached to download as a word document) activities can be noted throughout the year and uploaded by attaching the document to your account before the audit.
Simply tally up the hours and make sure you provide adequate learning outcomes and information about each activity.

Transfer your CPD from other professional bodies:

For any members who hold membership with more than one professional body, it is possible to upload CPD records from any other body, as long as they are in either PDF or Microsoft Word format, show a clear tally of hours and adequate learning outcomes and information about each activity.

Types of CPD

There are many different types of CPD and it is up to you to decide what works best for you. Before deciding which format is right for you, you should identity areas of personal and professional development and make sure that the CPD meets your desired outcomes.

Examples of CPD activities can be found below.

Your CPD should:

  • include theory and practice in relation to the professional services and functions you offer
  • reinforce your existing knowledge and skill set
  • cover developments in legislation and technological changes; and
  • enable you to offer the best possible advice to fellow professionals, clients and the public.

Reflective CPD:

CPD is essential for you to develop individually and professionally, however to ensure that all CPD activities hold the highest value members should be continuously engaging in reflective evaluation of their learning needs. A Personal Development Plan (PDP) allows you to reflect on your current knowledge. It allows you to identify skills gaps so you can tailor your CPD activities to your needs and ultimately allow you to maximise your learning outcomes. A PDP is a great way to keep you on track, help you identify your areas of study, schedule and record your year’s CPD. Download our helpful template below.

CPD requirements for CABE Members & why you should undertake CPD

Following the decision made by the CABE Board, Graduate, Technician and Associate membership grades will be required to start logging CPD from January 2024. The first audit of these grades will be in January 2025.

As Building Engineers, you work in a rapidly changing industry and it is imperative that you are aware of changes to standards, legislation, processes and materials and how this impacts your role. Without regular CPD your qualifications and knowledge will become outdated. All CABE members holding a paid grade of membership (excluding Retired) and/or an Engineering Council registration, are required to undertake and record online 35 hours of CPD a year (or 105 hours over 3 years averaging to 35 per year); with each activity having some measurable outcomes for example knowledge gained or skills developed. Failure to comply with this requirement is considered a breach of the CABE Code of Professional Conduct, and may result in the member being subject to the CABE disciplinary procedure.

Guidance for Membership and CBICAS Applications

The assessment of an applicant’s CPD record is an important part of a CABE Professional Review process and CPD records are required for new applications for membership, membership upgrades, and the CABE Building Inspector Competence Assessment Scheme (CBICAS)

A CPD record is a valuable way for an applicant to show that they take their own learning and development seriously and have engaged with well thought out professional development activities. It is also a useful tool for the Review Panel to view an applicant’s progress and areas of chosen study and interest, as well as any possible gaps.

For all CABE Applications, you should submit two years of CPD, making sure you cover 35 hours per year.

Please use the CPD record template to ensure you cover all of the required headings, including learning outcomes, that offer valuable information on the activities you are undertaking and the way you undertake CPD.

Please note: holding registration with either the Engineering Council or Society for the Environment requires a member
to maintain their CPD log, even for those holding a Retired Grade of Membership.
