What grade of membership am I eligible to apply for?
You can use our online quiz to help determine which grade is suitable for you.
The best way for us to advise further is to see your CV. Email your CV to membership@cbuilde.com and we’ll get in touch to advise.
I hold membership with another professional body. Am I eligible for equivalent membership with CABE?
CABE recognises members of certain professional bodies for Equivalent Membership. View our recognised organisations.
What is the difference between Chartered Member (MCABE) and Chartered Building Engineer (MCABE C.Build E
)?
Chartered Member (MCABE) and Chartered Building Engineer (MCABE C.Build E ) are both fully Chartered grades of membership. The higher grade of MCABE C.Build E signifies that the member is working in a senior position of responsibility, with experience in management and leadership. See our Competency Framework, in particular Competency C, for more detailed guidance.
Can I apply directly for Fellow Membership?
There is not a direct route for Chartered Fellow. You will need to apply for Chartered Building Engineer (MCABE C.Build E) first, whether by equivalent membership or via our professional interview process. Once you hold MCABE C.Build E membership with CABE, and if you meet the criteria for Chartered Fellow, you may apply for an upgrade.
How do I upgrade my membership?
Log into your CABE profile, then request an upgrade here.
I’m trying to apply but the application will not submit?
The application form has a 30-minute time limit. If you are unable to submit, please start your application again in a fresh window, making sure to complete within 30 minutes.
I have retired; may I keep my membership?
CABE offers a Retired grade of membership to members who are no longer undertaking any paid work within the built environment. This allows you to maintain your membership, keep using your CABE postnominal designation, and continue to receive our Building Engineer journal. To become a Retired member, please request a Retirement Declaration form from the Membership Team at membership@cbuilde.com.
My membership has lapsed; how can I become a CABE member again?
If your membership has lapsed within the last two years, you may come back into membership at your previous grade, without the need for a new application. Please email the team at membership@cbuilde.com to arrange this.
If it has been over two years since your membership was lapsed, you’ll need to make a new application for membership. Please email the team at membership@cbuilde.com to discuss.
How can I refer a colleague for membership?
I am unable to log in to cbuilde.com/I have forgotten my password?
Please use the password reset button. If the reset email does not come through, please check your spam/junk folder. If necessary, contact us at membership@cbuilde.com for further assistance.
How much does membership cost?
You can find our membership fee structure here.
I am having trouble paying my membership fees this year/I am on maternity leave?
CABE members who are experiencing ill health, loss of income, or are on maternity leave may apply for a concessionary rate. Please contact us at membership@cbuilde.com to apply.
Who is required to undertake CPD?

How do I upload my CPD?
How can I confirm whether someone is a member?
Please get in touch with the Membership Team at membership@cbuilde.com with the person’s name and, if possible, their membership number for confirmation.
Does CABE Membership mean a person can perform a specific job, such as fire risk surveys, structural engineering, etc.?
CABE Membership is a signifier of professional competence within the built environment. However, as CABE Members come from a wide variety of disciplines across the built environment, membership does not necessarily qualify a person to perform any
specific task.
Can you recommend a person to do a specific sort of work?
Whilst we cannot give out CABE Members’ contact information, you may use our Find a Building Engineer search function to check for members in your area.
As this is a voluntary registry, not all our members will be listed. Those who are listed may not have opted to have their contact information made available.
I have a technical question, can CABE help me?
As CABE is not a regulatory body, we do not, as a general rule, offer technical advice. However, you may email your query to membership@cbuilde.com,
and we will get in touch if we are able to help with your query.
