UK government’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) released a response yesterday (28 September) to the publication of the New Towns Taskforce report that same day.
The New Towns Taskforce is, as per the MHCLG, an independent expert advisory panel, first appointed in September 2024, to support the government in delivering the next generation of new towns across England. The Taskforce’s remit was to explore, and offer recommendations, on how a new generation of towns could help to meet England’s housing needs whilst offering thriving and sustainable new communities.
Chaired by Sir Michael Lyons and following a call for evidence which ran from November 2024 to mid-December 2024, the Taskforce has now published its report for government. Its recommendations include 12 potential locations for the new towns as well as how best to deliver them; in its initial response, the UK government has welcomed all 12 suggested sites, with a more in-depth response due in spring 2026.
