After Dinner Speaker Jem Musselwhite - C Build E FCABE, MIET, MIconstM
Speech - The Builder's Nipper With a career spanning nearly five decades, Jem Musselwhite brings a wealth of knowledge and stories from every corner of the construction industry. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jem began his journey quite literally at ground level—working hands-on across building sites and gaining practical insight that few professionals today can match. His path then took him into Local Authority Building Control, where he became deeply versed in planning, building regulations, and the intricate statutory framework that shapes the built environment.
Now a Chartered Building Engineer running his own practice, Jem combines technical expertise with a rare ability to see projects from both the builder’s and the client’s perspective. He has guided countless homeowners, businesses, and developers through the often-daunting planning system, helping them turn aspirations into reality. His unusual route—rising from site work to local authority service and on into consultancy—has given him “the best of both worlds”: the practical sharp-end experience of the trades and the professional authority of design and regulation.
As an after-dinner speaker, Jem shares not only professional insight but also fascinating stories from a life devoted to building—quite literally—better places for people to live, work, and thrive.

Winchester Cathedral — A must-see. Its history spans over a thousand years, and guided tours (along with special exhibitions) give insight into its architecture, tombs (including Jane Austen’s), and crypt. The Great Hall & King Arthur’s Round Table — Part of the medieval castle complex, this hall houses the iconic Round Table and is steeped in legend. Winchester City Mill — A working watermill right by the River Itchen. A pleasant and quieter stop, especially suitable for a thoughtful morning or afternoon visit. Wolvesey Castle (Old Bishop’s Palace) — The ruins offer atmospheric walks and nice views, especially around sunset. Westgate Museum & historic city gate — Explore local history housed in Winchester’s medieval gatehouse. The Military Museums — Located in the old Peninsular Barracks, this is actually six military-related museums in one complex. Stroll along the River Itchen — peaceful riverside walks are ideal, especially in autumn light. South Downs National Park — Winchester is right on the edge of the Downs, so short countryside walks or gentle hikes are very doable. • Explore the medieval streets & independent shops — wandering around the old lanes, discovering cafés, boutiques, and hidden alleys is always rewarding
