Updated guidance on whistleblowing has recently been published by the Engineering Council.

Its purpose is to help engineers and technicians raise concerns about danger, risk, malpractice or wrongdoing that could harm others. It is for all professionals working in engineering whether they are professionally registered or not.

New in this update, and informed by the Engineering Council’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policy statement, the guidance highlights that whistleblowing may not be limited to technical or safety issues alone. It may also involve financial and ethical issues, as well as unacceptable workplace behaviour, such as bullying, harassment, or discrimination in any form, which should be challenged.

This guidance explains what to consider when raising a concern, the professional responsibilities involved, available options, and where to seek further advice and support.
