CABE Residential Surveyor Section due to launch summer 2025

17 April 2025
Posted by: Lauren Almey

This summer, CABE will be launching the newly developed Residential Surveyor Section (RSS).

Designed to provide residential surveyors with an additional level of competence assessment, the RSS will help surveyors set themselves apart in a crowded marketplace.

Developed in conjunction with the Residential Property Surveyors Association (RPSA), and built around robust competence standards and qualifications, the RSS will provide homeowners, landlords and commercial clients with the confidence to appoint technically competent surveyors who they know are operating within a solid ethical framework.

The RSS will comprise of three membership levels:

RSS membership level:

Mapped against CABE Membership grade:

Technician Residential Surveyor

Technician (Tech CABE)

Associate Residential Surveyor

Associate (ACABE)

Residential Surveyor

Chartered Member (MCABE)

Coming in at any one of these levels will mean more specialised support from CABE; the Section’s tailormade framework opens up a route to CABE Chartered Membership in a way that might not have previously felt accessible to surveyors.

The level descriptors will sit after the member’s name to serve as a mark of professional validation to clients and peers alike.

The Section has a dedicated Steering Group made up of technical experts and representatives from the Residential Property Surveyors Association (RPSA) alongside independent surveyors, existing to strategise and implement the best decisions for the residential surveyor subset.

Who can join the RSS?

Joining the RSS requires a CABE Membership grade of equal level or above, as the eligibility criteria mirrors CABE Membership.

Eligibility criteria and application pathways for the RSS are in final development stages but will ultimately cover:

• CABE Members at the required grade

• CABE Members requiring a membership upgrade for desired Section level

• professionals with accredited qualifications; and

• non-members of CABE

How can I join the RSS?

Full details for pathway application processes and eligibility criteria will be disclosed to members in due course, but, in line with CABE Membership, RSS membership will include some form of assessment. The extent of assessment required will depend on any previous competence assessment already completed by the applicant, either through the Association’s membership pathways or accredited qualifications.

Generally speaking, RSS applicants can expect to be asked to submit 3-5 sample reports plus competence statements as part of the assessment process, as well as being required to take part in an interview.

For now, CABE advises all members to keep checking cbuilde.com and all email/newsletter channels from the Association for details on next steps for the RSS launch. The RPSA are issuing a separate announcement today (17 April) to their own members, where they are being advised to email rss@rpsa.org.uk to register their interest in the Section.
