Scottish Government opens two land use and sustainability consultations to the public

The Scottish Government has opened two consultations in quick succession, asking for public views on a draft transition plan and also on its proposed approach to a fourth Land Use Strategy.

The first consultation is seeking your views on a draft Land Use and Agriculture Just Transition Plan. The Plan as it stands sets out how the Scottish Government are working towards hitting their net-zero targets in a way that considers and includes those working within land-based industries. This draft does not set out new policies – the public consultation is to garner opinion on the current vision, objectives and planned outcomes.

Read more about the Plan’s background, and participate in the survey, by accessing the publication page here.

The second consultation, also stemming from the Land Use Strategy Team, is on the Department’s proposed approach to its next Land Use Strategy, which details the current direction for, and how to ultimately deliver, sustainable land use in Scotland.

The Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 requires Scottish Ministers by law to produce a Land Use Strategy every five years, and this next document is due to be published by the end of March 2026.

Both consultations close on 5 October 2025.
