The Southern Region of CABE rolled out the tracks for the second of their centenary celebration events on Saturday, 7 June, with a delightful day at The Kent & East Sussex Railway Company in Tenterden.

Regional Chair, Michael Wadood, warmly welcomed members from across the region to this special occasion. Despite a gloomy weather forecast, the sun made a welcome appearance, and the rain—ever polite—waited until the festivities had wrapped up. Even better, every member who booked made it on the day, which set the tone for a cheerful and well-attended gathering.

The group enjoyed a memorable ride aboard a classic steam train, complete with their own reserved carriage. There was plenty of time to explore the charming castle and its scenic grounds, where members soaked up the history and the day’s pleasant atmosphere. A knowledgeable volunteer added to the experience with a lively narrative about the railway’s fascinating past, offering a few hidden gems that brought the line’s story to life.

Adding a touch of playful magic, the event coincided with the release of How to Train Your Dragon, which inspired a dragon-themed adventure throughout the castle. Families with children enthusiastically took part in dragon hunts and quests, adding energy and excitement to the historic setting.

Many CABE members opted to return on an earlier train to enjoy a relaxed hour or two at the Beer Festival conveniently taking place at the station—a fitting end to a day of history, steam, and celebration.

As if perfectly timed, the predicted heavy rain finally arrived at 5:30 pm, just as most participants were making their way home, bringing the day to a close with a dramatic flourish.

By all accounts, it was a fantastic event filled with good company, great stories, and plenty of smiles—yet another successful chapter in CABE Southern Region’s centenary celebrations.
