Students from TUS Midwest have launched a new society – Women in Construction –  to encourage woman to come together to forge friendships, provide support and create networking opportunities.Maria Kyne, the Dean of Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment was joined by programme leaders and industry guests, including Richard Flynn, CABE Vice-President (and graduate of TUS) as she welcomed Alexandra Von Metzradt as Chair of the Women in Construction society.
Lecturer Deborah O'Sullivan spoke of the support that the students had from both Industry and TUS 'The support shown to these women today, is absolutely amazing … Well done to the students for this wonderful initiative, our future is in safe hands'.
Women working in construction account for less than 10% of the total construction workforce in Ireland and only 15% in the UK. Initiatives like these can help start to address this gender imbalance by highlighting the varied careers and opportunities in the construction industry and building networks of support.
