Singapore Chapter gives awareness to members and professionals on aberrations in design of minor structures and oversights in construction works.

A CABE Singapore Chapter face-to-face CPD Seminar was held on 28 July 2023, delivered by the Speaker Er Ng Cheng Kiat.

Er Ng Cheng Kiat is a practicing Civil and Structural Consulting Engineer, acquiring in-depth knowledge and experiences in design and management over a vast range of high-rise buildings and civil engineering projects in his 40 years of practice in Singapore.

Before unveiling the seminar, Mr. Sam Chu, Singapore Chapter Chairman, thanked the speaker to share his perspectives, and Trent Global College for sponsoring the venue.  He welcomed members, builders, building consultants and site supervisors to an afternoon of inspiring presentation - with opportunities for those attending to deepen relationships within the building engineering community.

Themed "Aberrations in Design of Minor Structures and Oversights in Design/Construction Works", the seminar was divided into two sessions.  In the first session, the speaker underlined feasible minor structural design approach for shallow foundation, bolt connections and slope strengthening.

He discussed with the participants by referring to case studies in design and construction oversight involving settlement and deflections of structures, concrete shrinkages, fatigue failure in steel structures, built-up structural steel sections, steel portal frame robustness and installation of structural anchors.

Attendees gained valuable insights on the responsibility of a professional building engineer to maintain a focus on safety while designing in an era of rapidly advancing technology.
