On the 6th July, the Southern Region held an on-line CPD which covered the “A Beginners guide to Thermal Bridging". The presentation was offered by Emma Mathias - Jones, a Principal Engineer with QODA a mechanical, electrical and sustainability consultancy organisation. Emma took the time the explain the different types of thermal bridges that could occur within a building and why are they important. Her presentation discussed the principles, uses, and importance of thermal bridging, how they are measured and calculated to see ways they can be improved. Emma touched upon how surface temperature condensation risk assessments fit in and offered an overview of the new Part L thermal bridging assumptions.
When considering a thermal insulation submission, anyone who is reviewing the submission should ask to see consideration towards thermal bridging and to ensure that this aspect is incorporated within the thermal insulation submission. During the CPD within the Q&A session it was pointed out that qualitative photographic evidence, of the as built construction detail, was now a requirement within the new Approved Document L 2022. The photos would need to be undertaken and assessed by both the energy assessor and Building Control body before the construction can have an EPC or final certificate issued.
