On the 20 October, the Southern Region held a free on-line CPD on waterproofing design strategies, based on the new BS 8102:2022. The presentation, to 48 members who joined via Microsoft Teams, was offered by Richard Crossley, Technical Director for Newton Waterproofing and who also holds an Associate Membership with CABE.

R
ichard discussed the importance of undertaking a full site assessment at an early stage of a design,
to ensure that all hazards which could affect the materials used within the design of waterproofing, could be identified. The presentation offered guidance on potential design requirements, the 3 types of waterproofing protection which are Type A (Barrier) Protection, Type B (Structural Integral) Protection and Type C (Drained) Pr
otection. Richard then spent time clarifying one of the main
changes within BS 8120: 2022 from the 2009 version, which was around grading of waterproofing. Grade 1 in BS 8120: 2022 is now divided into
two offers a Grade 1A and 1B protection.
In concluding this presentation Richard discussed the importance of having a combination waterproofing system and spent time talking around waterproofing design interfaces. The presentation was extremely informative and there were some good questions afterward from members.
