It means challenging design norms, questioning decisions that fall short of sustainability, and using our voice — even when it’s uncomfortable — to advocate for solutions that honour both the environment and the communities who rely on it. It’s about standing up for the future, not just reacting to the present. It’s about leading by example, inspiring others, and proving that meaningful change is not only necessary, but achievable.

"To anyone considering pursuing the CEnv registration, my message is simple and wholehearted: go for it. This journey will stretch you, empower you, and connect you with a community of people who are genuinely shaping a better world. It’s an opportunity to formalise your passion, amplify your impact, and step into a role that carries real purpose. You won’t regret taking that step — but you might regret not taking it sooner!”

To find out more about becoming a CEnv via CABE, visit cbuilde.com/Chartered_Environmentalist

Recognising outstanding individuals who have innovated, inspired, and have gone beyond what’s expected in their most recent work to protect, preserve, or enhance the environment, there are two prestigious awards up for grabs: 2026 Environmental Professional of the Year and 2026 Rising Star.

This is an opportunity to inspire future generations, acknowledge the expertise of your peers, and remind each other of our shared mission to make a positive impact on the environment every day.

Last year, in 2025, two outstanding Chartered Environmentalists were honoured as Environmental Professional of the Year: Robbie Epsom CEnv and Lukas Howell CEnv.

Reflecting on his win, Luke said: “I’m genuinely thrilled to have won the prestigious ‘Environmental Professional of the Year’ accolade. As someone who took a slightly unusual route professionally – I dropped out of college and didn’t go to university – receiving recognition from SocEnv and my peers is something I am extremely proud of.”

Robbie said: “It’s an honour to be acknowledged by the very body that supports and validates my professional journey. It reinforces the value of the rigorous path to chartership and the standards we uphold…While individual recognition is appreciated, any achievement in sustainability is fundamentally a collaborative effort... Thank you again for this recognition, for the reinforcement and thank you for this motivational boost to keep pushing forward.”

2024 Environmental Professional of the Year, Adrian Mill CEnv, explains: “I'm proud to tell anyone who'll listen that I have won the award - so people have a point of comparison, I liken it to a Chartered Accountant winning an award for Accountant of the Year, which I find helps people to understand how important it is.
SocEnv: Introducing the SocEnv Soil Management Hierarchies

The Society for the Environment is pleased to share its latest tool for improving how we use soils.

In September 2025, SocEnv launched two Soil Management Hierarchies, one for Development Sites and another for Rural Settings. Both hierarchies have been developed by the Soils and Stones Project Executive, with input from wider project volunteers and SocEnv partners.

Offering frameworks to guide soil management within the two respective settings, the hierarchies seek to clearly identify actions from most to least desirable, based on the impact these actions have on soil health and resource use efficiency.

Why we need good soil management

All practitioners can benefit from consideration of these hierarchies, and the Soils and Stones project is deliberately cross-sectoral and cross functional. Understanding soils is vital to addressing nature depletion, failing ecosystems, food and nutritional security, and rural and urban health and viability. They also play a key role in greenhouse gas dynamics.

How the tools can help

The use of the hierarchies can guide innovations, policy development, guidance and soil use strategies for government departments, development organisations, project design teams or landowners across sectors. They point to high level resource considerations, as well as specific tools and options for managing soils sustainably.

Get involved

Would you like to collaborate with other experts on the shaping of other soil management tools and guidance?

The Society for the Environment believes in cohesive, evidence-based policy. Recent activity has included:

At SocEnv’s annual World Environment Day and Awards event, a panel discussion was held on ending plastic pollution, particularly on the role of international policy in agreeing solutions, including the UN Global Plastics Treaty.

The influential, Chartered Environmentalist-led Soils and Stones Project shaped responses to key government consultations, highlighting gaps in soil policy and landfill tax regulation.

During Net Zero Week, SocEnv joined fellow members of the Environmental Policy Forum (EPF) in meeting with Lauren Edwards MP, presenting a series of case studies advocating for embedding green skills in education, creating a cross-government body, and launching a Green Skills Fund.

In a period which saw the EPF grow to a collective of 15 professional bodies and learned societies, SocEnv responded to the land use consultation, arguing that the integrated nature of natural assets must be recognised. The Society also made the case for ongoing dialogue and engagement between government and stakeholders.

To find out more about all recent policy activity and impact, and discover how you might be able to get involved, by checking out their latest blog at socenv.org.uk/resource/spring-summer-2025-policy-update

Don't forget, CABE is licensed by the Society for the Environment to award the professional registrations REnvTech, REnvP and CEnv to members.
10 Things to Consider when Presenting Your Business for the Best PII Terms

When it comes to securing the best possible terms for your Professional Indemnity (PI), the way you present your business to insurers can significantly impact the outcome.

At a recent CABE webinar, Tim Grant, Director of UKGlobal (now part of Howden) shared his knowledge on the key things underwriters look for and how you can position your business to get the terms that individually meet the needs of your business.

Here are the top ten things to consider when preparing your insurance presentation:

1. Provide a clear company overview

Start with the basics, who you are, what you do, and how long you’ve been in operation. Include information on your company’s structure, its locations and key markets. A well-articulated summary helps insurers immediately grasp your business’ profile.

2. Showcase experience of directors and key staff

Insurers want to know who’s steering the ship so detail the backgrounds of directors and senior managers, highlighting their industry experience, qualifications and areas of expertise. Don’t shy away from selling your leadership team.

3. Specify the nature of your work

Clarify the types of services you offer and the sectors you operate in. Mention whether you use subcontractors or third parties, and how you manage those relationships. Risk exposure varies by activity so make sure you are specific.

4. Define project scope and responsibility

For each project type, explain your business’ level of involvement and its responsibilities. Are you leading design, managing project builds or providing oversight matters?

Be clear and transparent about what you are, and aren’t, accountable for.

5. Highlight your risk management approach

Demonstrate your stance on risk. What systems, accreditations or internal protocols do you follow? For instance, if you hold ISO certifications, undertake quality audits, or follow incident review processes mention them in the presentation. The more you explain what your business does to mitigate risks, the better.

6. Explain any claims history

If you have had past claims, be honest – insurers value transparency. Detail what happened, how it was resolved, and most importantly, what steps were taken to prevent recurrence. This shows maturity and responsibility.

7. Clarify your insurance objectives

Clearly state what coverage you're looking for. Do you need retroactive cover for past projects? Or a higher limit due to size of the project or contract?

Show you understand your own risk profile and coverage needs at the outset.

8. Assess the quotations carefully

Not all insurance quotes are equal, check:

who the insurer and broker are, do they specialise in PI?

basis of cover – civil liability v’s errors and omissions

claims basis – one claim v’s aggregate claims

whether defence costs are included

policy exclusions and excess terms; and

retroactive coverage and sufficiency of limit

Don’t assume a cheaper quote offers the same protection.

9. Avoid common pitfalls

Rushing submissions, omitting key details, or approaching too many brokers can raise red flags. Always complete proposal forms meticulously and align your insurance with contractual commitments – especially with any older agreements.

10. Consider Directors & Officers Insurance

Don’t overlook the importance of D&O cover. With increasing regulatory pressure, directors can face personal liability for compliance failures and legal defence costs can be steep.

Final thoughts

In today’s regulatory and contractual environment, insurers are looking for businesses that understand and actively manage risk. A strong, transparent, and well-documented presentation not only improves your chances of better terms, but it can be the difference between adequate protection and costly exposure.

Take the time to prepare your presentation and this investment will pay off.

2024 marks the 20-year anniversary of the Society for the
Environment (SocEnv), and subsequently their Chartered Environmentalist registration (CEnv).

CABE has been a licensed body with SocEnv since 2008 and in that time, we have successfully awarded the title of Chartered Environmentalist and Registered Environmental Practitioner to CABE Members and sustainability pioneers.

To celebrate this milestone, we asked CABE Chartered Fellow and SocEnv Chartered Environmentalist,
John Corben
, to share with us his experiences of being a CEnv and the benefits he has had as a result.

Q. What level of SocEnv registration do you hold and how long have you held it?
I am a Chartered Environmentalist, having been qualified with CABE for over 10 years.

Q. What is your current role and what path did you take to get here?
I became a member of the CABE (IAAS as it was then) in 1974, the same year I qualified as a surveyor. Since that time, I have had a varied and interesting career working in our family firm based in South East Dorset. My primary role is running the professional department of the business. I have chiefly been involved in:

preparing professional reports on properties, mostly residential, throughout the area

diagnosing and subsequently supervising the remedial repairs of structures

preparing expert reports and providing appropriate testimony to the Courts; and

specialising in construction/property disputes.

I am fortunate to live in a great community and also devote time to assisting a number of charities as I consider it is important to contribute to the area you live in to the benefit of others.

Q. What led you to register with the Society for the Environment?
The reason why I decided to register with the Society for the Environment was that I strongly believe that safeguarding the environment is one of the most important aspects of the world today. We are, after all, just custodians of this planet and we need to make sure that we do all we can to protect it for the benefit of future generations.

Q. What value and benefit has your Society for the Environment registration provided you in your career?
I have benefitted greatly from being a Chartered Environmentalist. The regular information supplied by the Society keeps me updated with important environmental issues.

Q. Why would you recommend Society for the Environment registration?
I would strongly recommend registration with the Society as it provides an important focal point for those involved in the environment today.

Q. In your opinion, why is it important that we have bodies like SocEnv who are dedicated to the environment?

As stated previously, it is vitally important that we as professionals are fully aware of the diverse issues which are impacting on the environment and do all we can to protect future generations and our communities.

Further Information:

CABE members can apply to register with the Society for the Environment as a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), a Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP),
or a Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech).

By achieving SocEnv registration you demonstrate your commitment to good practice and clearly show that you consider environmental and sustainable options before and during projects in order to minimise damage now and in the future.

Private Healthcare Is Peace Of Mind

No matter how fit and healthy we are, it is inevitable that at some point in our lives we will fall ill and need medical care. And when illness does strike it is to the NHS that most people will turn in seeking a diagnosis, treatment and recovery.

The NHS has for some years been showing signs that it too is not in the best of health. A growing and ageing population is putting an ever-increasing strain on staff and services. A problem exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Reports of underfunding, a shortage of medical staff, noisy and overcrowded wards, cancelled operations and long waiting times will be familiar to everyone.

In England, hospital waiting lists are longer than ever before, with a total waiting list of 7.3 million people.* This is the highest number since records began and illustrates the severe pressure that the NHS is under.

Quick, private and convenient

Understandably, these lengthy delays are causing additional stress for patients, undermining their health and quality of life even further. How many people do you know whose physical health and mental well-being has deteriorated from the anxiety of having to wait months for a hospital appointment?

All this can be avoided by taking out private health insurance. Seeing a doctor in private practice used to be only for the wealthy, but not anymore as the cost of private medical cover is becoming more affordable.

A private medical plan delivers prompt access to hospital consultants, thus avoiding lengthy waiting lists. Patients can choose from an extensive list of hospitals throughout the UK; if they need to be admitted, they will have their own private room equipped with TV and telephone, and visiting is arranged to suit patient and family. A quick, private and convenient service that removes many of the anxieties associated with NHS hospital stays.

Taking control of your healthcare

However, those interested in taking out health insurance should not leave it too late. As we get older our healthcare needs increase. Therefore, as only some of the best health insurance companies provide cover for pre-existing conditions, the best time to invest in getting private treatment for illnesses you may suffer tomorrow – is today.

By acting now you can ensure your future healthcare will not be dictated by NHS bureaucracy and, just as importantly, you will be able to benefit from the widest possible cover.

Private health insurance cannot guarantee good health, but it can ensure that when you are feeling unwell you will quickly receive the best possible care, when and where you want it. The peace of mind that comes with that knowledge cannot be underestimated and is often the most important factor for people deciding to take control of their healthcare provision and go private.

HMCA offers CABE Members access to Private Medical Cover.
