Environmental professionals gathered on 4 June 2026 to celebrate the achievements of those going above and beyond through the Society for the Environment Awards.

More than 8,500 environmental professionals meet the required standard to highlight their environmental and sustainability expertise as a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv), Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) or Registered Environmental Technician (REnvTech), but some warrant further recognition for going above and beyond and are commended via the annual SocEnv Awards.  

SocEnv had a record-breaking number of incredible entries this year, showcasing the many outstanding environmental professionals working hard to protect, preserve or enhance the environment. During the ceremony, SocEnv announced the winners and highly commended finalists for both awards and recognised their newest Honorary Fellows for their huge contribution to sustainability.

Focusing on this year’s World Environment Day theme of climate action, SocEnv asked its 2025 Environmental Professional of the Year winners to speak about their respective industries and how they are working to tackle climate change with a call to action to everyone in attendance.

Over the past few months, SocEnv have been working hard to make their case to policymakers, across a range of vital topics. Recent activity has included:

• For Chartered Week in February, SocEnv joined a group of professional bodies representing more than 1.5 million people asking Ministers to take a lead in championing professional registration and Chartered status.
  
  
• The collaborative Environmental Policy Forum (EPF) - for which SocEnv acts as Secretariat - recently announced The Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) as their newest member. The EPF now encompasses sixteen professional bodies and learned societies, working across a wide range of disciplines. 

• Through the EPF, the interdisciplinary SocEnv Soils and Stones project, and education team, SocEnv fed into multiple key Government consultations, including those focussed on reforms to the National Planning Policy Framework, Post-16 level 3 and below pathways and the regulatory framework for apprenticeship assessment; and,
  
  
• SocEnv signed in support of two collaborative calls to action on nature - outlining their concerns regarding Biodiversity Net Gain exemptions and calling on the UK Government to renew its commitment to nature.

This is an opportunity to inspire future generations, acknowledge the expertise of your peers, and remind each other of our shared mission to make a positive impact on the environment every day.

Last year, in 2025, two outstanding Chartered Environmentalists were honoured as Environmental Professional of the Year: Robbie Epsom CEnv and Lukas Howell CEnv.

Reflecting on his win, Luke said: “I’m genuinely thrilled to have won the prestigious ‘Environmental Professional of the Year’ accolade. As someone who took a slightly unusual route professionally – I dropped out of college and didn’t go to university – receiving recognition from SocEnv and my peers is something I am extremely proud of.”


Robbie said: “It’s an honour to be acknowledged by the very body that supports and validates my professional journey. It reinforces the value of the rigorous path to chartership and the standards we uphold…While individual recognition is appreciated, any achievement in sustainability is fundamentally a collaborative effort... 2024 Environmental Professional of the Year, Adrian Mill CEnv, explains: “I'm proud to tell anyone who'll listen that I have won the award - so people have a point of comparison, I liken it to a Chartered Accountant winning an award for Accountant of the Year, which I find helps people to understand how important it is. It already has resulted in me being invited to speak in more conferences, which by consequence helps to raise the profile of my companies as well as the environmental causes that I am passionate about.”

Access Free Guidance on Good Soil Management 

The SocEnv Soils and Stones project recently launched two completely free tools, packed full of guidance on using and managing soil across land types. 

Both tools reflect the project’s central vision: for soil and soil-related material to be recognised for their enormous natural capital and the variety of ecosystem services they provide.

The SILOtoSOIL Tool 

Launched alongside SocEnv’s partners Midlands Land Events (MidLE), the SILOtoSOIL Tool has been created to highlight – and make easily accessible – the wealth of existing soil-related expertise, guidance, and publications available across different disciplines and locations. 

The Soil Management Hierarchies 

SocEnv has also produced two Soil Management Hierarchies, one for development sites and another for rural settings.

Offering frameworks to guide soil management within the two respective settings, the hierarchies seek to clearly identify actions from most to least desirable, based on the impact these actions have on soil health and resource use efficiency.

The Society for the Environment is pleased to share its latest tool for improving how we use soils.

Why we need good soil management 

All practitioners can benefit from consideration of these hierarchies, and the Soils and Stones project is deliberately cross-sectoral and cross functional. Understanding soils is vital to addressing nature depletion, failing ecosystems, food and nutritional security, and rural and urban health and viability. They also play a key role in greenhouse gas dynamics. 

How the tools can help

The use of the hierarchies can guide innovations, policy development, guidance and soil use strategies for government departments, development organisations, project design teams or landowners across sectors. They point to high level resource considerations, as well as specific tools and options for managing soils sustainably.

• The influential, Chartered Environmentalist-led Soils and Stones Project shaped responses to key government consultations, highlighting gaps in soil policy and landfill tax regulation.
• During Net Zero Week, SocEnv joined fellow members of the Environmental Policy Forum (EPF) in meeting with Lauren Edwards MP, presenting a series of case studies advocating for embedding green skills in education, creating a cross-government body, and launching a Green Skills Fund.
• In a period which saw the EPF grow to a collective of 15 professional bodies and learned societies, SocEnv responded to the land use consultation, arguing that the integrated nature of natural assets must be recognised. The Society also made the case for ongoing dialogue and engagement between government and stakeholders.

At a recent CABE webinar, Tim Grant, Director of UKGlobal (now part of Howden) shared his knowledge on the key things underwriters look for and how you can position your business to get the terms that individually meet the needs of your business.

Here are the top ten things to consider when preparing your insurance presentation:

1. Provide a clear company overview

Start with the basics, who you are, what you do, and how long you’ve been in operation. Include information on your company’s structure, its locations and key markets. A well-articulated summary helps insurers immediately grasp your business’ profile.

2. Showcase experience of directors and key staff

Insurers want to know who’s steering the ship so detail the backgrounds of directors and senior managers, highlighting their industry experience, qualifications and areas of expertise. Don’t shy away from selling your leadership team.

3. Specify the nature of your work

Clarify the types of services you offer and the sectors you operate in. Mention whether you use subcontractors or third parties, and how you manage those relationships. Risk exposure varies by activity so make sure you are specific.

4. Define project scope and responsibility

For each project type, explain your business’ level of involvement and its responsibilities. Are you leading design, managing project builds or providing oversight matters?

Be clear and transparent about what you are, and aren’t, accountable for.

5. Highlight your risk management approach

Demonstrate your stance on risk. What systems, accreditations or internal protocols do you follow? For instance, if you hold ISO certifications, undertake quality audits, or follow incident review processes mention them in the presentation. The more you explain what your business does to mitigate risks, the better.

6. Explain any claims history

If you have had past claims, be honest – insurers value transparency. Detail what happened, how it was resolved, and most importantly, what steps were taken to prevent recurrence. This shows maturity and responsibility.

7. Clarify your insurance objectives

Clearly state what coverage you're looking for. Do you need retroactive cover for past projects? Or a higher limit due to size of the project or contract?

Show you understand your own risk profile and coverage needs at the outset.

8. Assess the quotations carefully

Not all insurance quotes are equal, check:

• who the insurer and broker are, do they specialise in PI?
• basis of cover – civil liability v’s errors and omissions
• claims basis – one claim v’s aggregate claims
• whether defence costs are included
• policy exclusions and excess terms; and
• retroactive coverage and sufficiency of limit

Don’t assume a cheaper quote offers the same protection.

9. Avoid common pitfalls

Rushing submissions, omitting key details, or approaching too many brokers can raise red flags. Always complete proposal forms meticulously and align your insurance with contractual commitments – especially with any older agreements.

10. Consider Directors & Officers Insurance

Don’t overlook the importance of D&O cover. With increasing regulatory pressure, directors can face personal liability for compliance failures and legal defence costs can be steep.

Final thoughts

In today’s regulatory and contractual environment, insurers are looking for businesses that understand and actively manage risk. A strong, transparent, and well-documented presentation not only improves your chances of better terms, but it can be the difference between adequate protection and costly exposure.

Who SocEnv is

SocEnv define the standards for professional competence in environmental practice, ensuring key decisions are made by verified professionals. A growing community

Becoming a CEnv means joining a global community of likeminded experts. Last year a new milestone of 8,000 Chartered Environmentalists was reached, showing competent professionals are needed to tackle the interconnected climate and nature crises and that this need is recognised now more than ever.

Over recent months, SocEnv have been marking the 20^th anniversary of the CEnv registration and were delighted to see the efforts and achievements of Chartered professionals recognised by Mary Creagh CBE MP. Speaking in her capacity as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Nature, Mary said:

This year, Society for the Environment (SocEnv) marks 20 years of the CEnv registration and to celebrate, SocEnv have put the spotlight on Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) professionals registered each year since 2004.

20 years of excellence

Since receiving their Royal Charter in 2004, SocEnv has licensed the awarding of the CEnv registration. In that time, SocEnv has overseen the registration of over 10,000 environmental professionals who are all members of professional bodies, including CABE. 

Who are Chartered Environmentalists and how do they make a difference?

CEnvs work around the world and across a wide range of disciplines including engineering, forestry, ecology, resource management, agriculture, consulting, planning, environmental assessment and air quality. 

By being part of the CEnv community, professionals are able to collaborate, find solutions and network, reflecting the interconnected nature of the climate and biodiversity challenges that we face.

Rory began his career as a Stock Condition Surveyor, after completion of his MSc in Commercial Building Surveying. He then continued on into working for national surveying consultancies as a Project Manager, overseeing large surveying projects.

He then moved on to Liverpool City Council, surveying their corporate stock and managing minor works to schools, before working directly for a housing association on the Wirral, focussing on their asbestos management.

Following a move to Devon, Rory then worked as the Head of Surveying for a large South West based housing provider, taking the lead on projects addressing the sustainability of their existing stock.

He moved into his current role in October 2022 where he is Head of Net Zero for Rand Associates.
