A Letter from CABE President, Ant Burd: A COVID-19 Response

17 March 2020

Dear Members,

COVID-19 has left us all living in uncertain times, with travel restrictions and advice about minimising contact with others in order to keep ourselves, our families, and our loved ones safe.

Last night the UK Government revised its guidance on COVID-19, advising that people should stop non-essential contact, avoid all unnecessary travel, and gatherings of any size. The safety of members, visitors, and staff is of course CABE’s top priority, therefore, following the UK government’s advice, all CABE training and events in the UK and Ireland have been cancelled until 30 June. Wherever possible, our team at headquarters will be looking to reschedule these events to a later date or move them online, however, we can confirm that cancellations include:

  • training at headquarters
  • regional events
  • buildeng conferences
  • professional interviews, and
  • face-to-face meetings.

Last year, CABE made a significant investment in our IT and online platforms, which has allowed us to expand our digital offerings, such as the provision of webinars and training. As a building engineer, and a professional in the industry, maintaining your CPD obligation is as important now as it has always been and the team at CABE will be working hard to support you to meet your obligations.

On a more positive note, CABE received fantastic news last week that our Building Engineer journal has been shortlisted for a Memcom Membership Excellence Award in the category, Best Magazine Launch or Re-launch. This recognition is not just good for the association, but for all our members communicating to a wider audience the technical ability and professionalism of building engineers throughout the world.

Alongside this, we are pleased to report that the academic team have been busy developing links with universities and approved accreditation centres in the UK, Ireland, and overseas. We have four new Academic Partners: Hull College, University of West London, SAVA, and Total Training and Development. Over the next few months, we will be working with our Academic Partners towards accrediting their course programmes to make sure that today’s students are qualified to be the building engineers of the future.

As COVID-19 is an unprecedented global situation that changes daily, everyone at CABE is working hard to minimise the disruption and to continue to support our members worldwide.

 Take care,

Ant Burd
