The delegation first looked at the Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) inside the Guangdong Hailong Construction Technology Co., Ltd in Zhuhai. The visit provided a comprehensive understanding of the full production process, from wall panel fabrication to modular assembly. CABE Members observed the application of robotic automation and digital management systems, as well as stringent quality control measures achieving millimetre-level precision. The exchange highlighted how MiC technology can enhance construction efficiency, reduce waste, and support Macau’s transition towards smart and green building development. 

The delegation also visited Tendfine Intelligent Tower Crane System. Members witnessed the real-time operation of Level 4 autonomous tower crane systems integrating artificial intelligence, 5G communication, and digital twin technologies. The system enables remote operation, automated route planning, and multi-equipment coordination, significantly improving site safety and operational efficiency.

These visits provided valuable insight into innovative construction practices and reinforced CABE Macau’s commitment to supporting industry modernisation and regional collaboration.

To keep pace with the infrastructure development of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), deepen engineering exchanges between Hong Kong and Macau, and promote high-quality growth in smart infrastructure and the digital economy, a delegation from the CABE Macau Chapter recently visited the Hong Kong SAR Legislative Council for a focused exchange.

Led by Mr. Danny Chan, Macau Chapter Chair, the delegation met with Honourable Chong Ho-fung, a Legislative Council member, to discuss the planning of the Northern Metropolis and the industrial layout of government data centres.

During the meeting, the Macau delegation highly commended Hong Kong’s advanced experience in metropolitan and digital infrastructure development, noting that high-quality GBA growth depends on resource sharing, technical exchange, and talent mobility between the two cities.

The Macau Chapter pledged to continue serving as a bridge for regular dialogue, technical seminars, and project collaboration among engineers from Hong Kong, Macau, and China Mainland. All participants agreed that data centres are vital to the GBA’s smart city cluster.

Moving forward, the Hong Kong, Macau, and China Mainland will deepen cooperation in infrastructure, digital industries, and engineering technology to support connectivity, coordinated digital growth, and national development strategies, contributing engineering expertise to the high-quality construction of the GBA and China’s digital transformation.

CABE’s Macau Chapter recently organised a delegation visit to the “2026 National Security Education Exhibition” in Macau, demonstrating strong support for initiatives that reinforce national security awareness and align with broader national development strategies.

The visit, undertaken in collaboration with local professional bodies including the Macau Urban Research Association and the Macau Asian Design Association, highlighted the important role that built environment professionals play in safeguarding national security through responsible planning, design, and engineering practice.

The exhibition, themed around integrating development and security under the framework of the 14th Five-Year Plan, showcased how Macau continues to achieve high-quality and secure development under the “One Country, Two Systems” principle. Through a range of multimedia displays and interactive installations, attendees gained deeper insights into the strategic direction of national development including the Greater Bay Area.

This visit highlights the Chapter’s ongoing efforts to engage its members with national priorities while contributing to the sustainable development of the built environment sector.

The visit highlighted the evolving role of building engineers in heritage conservation, sustainability, and whole-life asset management. The project demonstrated how modern building services, safety systems, and structural upgrades can be successfully integrated while preserving architectural authenticity, showcasing Macau's high standards in heritage revitalisation.

This engagement strengthened professional exchange and contributed to CABE’s wider objectives in professional development, education, and international collaboration.

Organised by the Macao Project Management Professionals Association, together with leading built‑environment bodies, the Awards serve as an important platform recognising outstanding achievement and advancing professional excellence within Macau’s construction and engineering sectors.

This year’s programme attracted in excess of 30 submissions from both local and international organisations, demonstrating the continued growth of project management capability across the region. Following a rigorous assessment process, undertaken by a multidisciplinary panel of industry experts, 20 exemplary projects were selected for recognition. These projects encompassed a wide range of scales and typologies—from public housing and healthcare facilities to light‑rail infrastructure and refurbishment works—each showcasing commendable standards in risk management, team coordination, occupational safety, innovation and sustainable practice.

In supporting the Awards, the CABE Macau Chapter reaffirms its commitment to enhancing the quality, safety and sustainability of the built environment in Macau. The Chapter works closely with local partners to promote professionalism, encourage knowledge exchange and strengthen industry competence. Its participation in this initiative highlights the Association’s ongoing efforts to raise standards and champion excellence across the construction and engineering community.

The Chapter looks forward to continuing its collaboration with industry stakeholders to support initiatives that drive continuous improvement and foster a culture of innovation and best practice within the Macau built environment.

On 2 December 2025, CABE Hong Kong Chair Kyran Sze attended the School of Continuing and Professional Education of City University of Hong Kong (CityU SCOPE) graduation ceremony and presented the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) Best Final Year Student Awards to TSE Wai Sheung and CHAN Wing Ki on behalf of the Association.


CABE warmly congratulates both awardees on their outstanding achievements.

TSE Wai Sheung, coming from BSc (Hons) Construction Management delivered by the University of Wolverhampton in collaboration with CityU SCOPE, brings 15+ years of cross-disciplinary excellence spanning architecture, interior design, and construction management. With significant contributions to ASD contracts and CLP Power Hong Kong projects, TSE demonstrates leadership, technical depth, and creative problem-solving. She is trained in BIM-Revit, Quantity Surveying, and 3D rendering, holds a Professional Diploma in Interior Design, and is proficient in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Project.

CHAN Wing Ki, coming from BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying delivered by the University of Wolverhampton in collaboration with CityU SCOPE, has 6+ years of progressive industry experience, delivering on notable works including the Kai Tak Development, Elements VIP renovations, and Lingnan University infrastructure. With strengths in contract management, cost assessment, and multi-stakeholder collaboration—from Assistant QS to independent project manager—CHAN is skilled in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Microsoft Office, and contract documentation, and is poised to make a strong impact on the built environment.

We are delighted to announce that on 11 December, CABE Chief Executive Mr. Richard Harral visited the University of Built Environment (UBE) Asia Pacific office. Accompanying him were Hong Kong Chapter Chair Kyran Sze and Hong Kong Chapter General Manager Vivian Sie.

The visit underscores the strong partnership between UBE and CABE, which has been thriving in England and is now set to gain momentum in Hong Kong. We are enthusiastic about the closer collaboration and the opportunities it brings for our students and faculty.

As part of our ongoing efforts to support and nurture budding professionals, CABE warmly invites UBE students to register for CABE's FREE Student membership. During CABE CEO Mr. Richard Harral’s stay in Hong Kong, he witnessed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing session on 11 December.  The MoU was officially signed between the CABE Hong Kong Chapter and the Hong Kong Institute of Project Management (HKIPM). This significant event took place just before the commencement of a joint Continuing Professional Development (CPD) seminar at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The MoU was signed in the esteemed presence of Mr. Richard Harral, CABE CEO, who travelled from the UK to witness this milestone. Richard stated: "I am very pleased to witness the signing of this MoU which marks a new era of collaboration between our Hong Kong Chapter and HKIPM. This partnership will undoubtedly foster professional growth and contribute to the betterment of Hong Kong's building and project management sectors."

We warmly welcome HKIPM members to join CABE and look forward to co-organising more CPD events with the CABE Hong Kong Chapter. Both organisations are committed to working together for the advancement and betterment of Hong Kong through this MoU.

On 11 December, CABE Chief Executive Mr. Richard Harral visited the Hong Kong Construction Industry Trade Testing Centre (HKCITTC) at the Construction Industry Council (CIC). The HKCITTC is dedicated to enhancing the professional skills of workers in the built environment industry, ensuring the manpower supply in Hong Kong meets the city's needs.

Richard was thoroughly impressed by the HKCITTC's operations and the significant role it plays in developing skilled workers. He encouraged these workers to join the Association based on their experience and qualifications. Richard believes that with the support of a global professional body like CABE, local workers can gain international exposure, which will be an invaluable addition to their professional development. This exposure not only aids in their professional growth, but also empowers them to make greater contributions to Hong Kong and wider spectrum.

The visit was meaningful, and CABE is committed to developing strategies to further support the skilled workers from the HKCITTC of CIC.

CABE is thrilled to welcome UniMAP into its collaborative network and looks forward to a fruitful partnership.  In addition, the region is excited to announce that the CABE Malaysia International Conference will take place on 24 April 2026.  We warmly invite representatives from UniMAP to attend and share the latest insights and developments across the sector.  CABE representatives will also have the opportunity to visit UniMAP and conduct a membership briefing for their students during a planned visit to Malaysia next year.

We look forward to strengthening our ties with UniMAP and working together to advance the industry. This partnership marks the beginning of a promising journey, and we are eager to see the positive impact it will have on our community.

Earlier this month, CABE Singapore Chapter were delighted to welcome a group of CABE Members, led by Steven Lonsdale FCABE C.Build E IEng, en route to a fire safety expo in the Singapore Bay.

Chapter Chair Sam Chu met the members at the Raffles Hotel where they discussed the complexities of design, construction and regulation in the area, impacted by tidal pressure and high levels of rainfall.

It was wonderful for the members to connect with the Chapter and exchange experiences prior to the group exploring Singapore and its architecture further.

      

With artificial intelligence (AI) so topical these days, CABE’s Hong Kong Chapter organised a technical visit to the Centre for Future Construction alongside the Hong Kong Construction Industry Council in October. Spanning over 10,000sq ft, the CFC features five interconnected zones - the Digital Twin Hub, 4S Hub, AI Hub, Robotic Hub, and Immersive Cave. Each zone showcases advanced construction technologies such as digital twin applications, AI-powered safety solutions, robotics, and Virtual Reality (VR)/Augmented Reality (AR) immersive training tools.

A fully booked event, a third of the participants were CABE Student Members taking part in a CABE CPD activity for the first time.

CABE Hong Kong Chair Kyran Sze stated: “We are dedicated to helping our CABE Student Members balance their academic pursuits with sufficient hands-on experience, ensuring that they can excel in their future career.”  

On 25 April, prominent leaders from the  built environment industry, along with approx. 100 CABE Members and heads of allied institutes, gathered at the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the latest industry developments.

The conference was also streamed live to just under 200 attendees.

Supported by both AIAC and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), the theme for this year was 'constructive collaboration'. CABE Malaysia Chapter Chair Isacc Sunder Rajan Packianathan opened the conference, welcoming CABE Head of Technical Insight Hywel Davies who also presented at the event, representing CABE HQ.

On 26 January 2024, CABE Hong Kong Chair Kyran Sze and General Manager Vivian Sie, were invited to give a membership session to CR Construction, inspiring their colleagues to embark on a professional journey for personal growth.

They resonated deeply with Kyran who said, "I appreciate this valuable opportunity to engage with energetic professionals of CR Construction and learn more about their lifelong commitment to contributing to the industry.  Through our interaction, I have once again experienced their amicability and team spirit."  The attainment and recognition of CABE Membership reinforced their determination to strive for professional excellence.

To enlarge exposure on organic, non-toxic and renewable materials, and help members get accustomed to mandatory CPD starting 1 January 2024, CABE Hong Kong Chapter has kicked off the first CPD event for the year, held on 25 January 2024.

The CPD event was a site visit "Explore Sustainable Surfaces with LAB' telier" delivered by COLOURLIVING.  Members were inspired by the wide range of environmentally conscious architectural and decorative coverings introduced by Ms. Elena Terrega, Product Portfolio Manager, and Ms. Rita Chow, Digital Marking Manager.

We appreciated the hospitality of COLOURLIVING for inviting us to their offices for the event.

The participants were happy to understand more thoughtful design choices than can help create healthier, more efficient and visually appealing buildings and spaces.  They said that the said visit was interesting, practical and beneficial to them.

CABE’s Interim Chief Executive Officer Mr. Richard Harral and Chief Operating Officer Mrs. Jackie Macaulay conducted a management visit to Hong Kong between 27 November – 1 December 2023. 

During their visit, they met with the British Consulate, local professional bodies, and communities.
They were also invited by the Buildings Department, HKSAR, and local academic partners for official meetings and functions. 

CABE CPD Events

During their visit, Jackie and Richard both got the opportunity to meet CABE members and enjoyed discussing the challenges and opportunities within the construction industry. 

Richard was delighted to present a CPD seminar to seventy participants including CABE Members and professional colleagues. He discussed the UK’s new duty-holding regime and explained how the introduction of new responsibilities for designers, contractors and other professionals is changing the face of the UK’s construction sector. 

Jackie was also given the opportunity to share valuable advice to CABE Members on how they can attain Engineering Council’s Chartered Engineer registration and Society for the Environment’s Chartered Environmentalist registration.

CABE’s Shared Mission and Vision with the Buildings Department, HKSAR 

During the visit, Richard and Jackie, accompanied by Hong Kong Chapter Chair Mr. Kyran Sze, met with the Buildings Department of HKSAR.

CABE Members in Hong Kong are proactively supporting the Buildings Department’s mission to promote building safety and are setting and enforcing safety, health and environmental standards for private buildings, as well as improving the quality of building development. 

Reciprocally, CABE’s Asia Pacific conference held in February 2023 was strongly supported by the Building Department, and some professional and technical staff members have proactively taken part in CABE CPD events to build up their specialist knowledge and deepen their expertise of the construction industry.

CABE and PolyU SPEED Forge International Academic Partnership

CABE and the School of Professional Education and Executive Development, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU SPEED) have embarked on a new academic partnership, marking a significant milestone in the field of building engineering education.

The partnership was officially inaugurated at an “International Academic Partnership Engagement Ceremony” where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by Mr. Richard Harral and Dr. Simon Cheung, Head of College of Professional and Continuing Education under the witness of CABE Hong Kong General Committee Members. This MOU signifies the commitment between CABE and PolyU SPEED to foster collaboration in continuing education and academic research.

As an international academic partner of CABE, PolyU SPEED will provide students with a platform to kick-start their professional journey, gain practical experience, and build the necessary networks for their future careers.

CABE Work with VTC SHAPE Closer 

Mr. Richard Harral and Mr. Kyran Sze visited the School of Higher and Professional Education, Vocational Training Council (VTC SHAPE) to look at how to strengthen the collaboration and support for their
CABE-accredited courses provided by the Coventry University and University of Central Lancashire.

They visited Dr. YK Chau and Ir. Dr. Paul Wong of VTC SHAPE to learn more about SHAPE’s engineering disciplines, areas of internationalisation, industry partnerships, quality assurance, accreditation, student industrial placements and graduate employment. 

VTC SHAPE is a key working partner of CABE, and both Richard and Kyran highlighted further possible collaborations between the two organisations, including areas which could bring benefits to students who are engaging in built-environment programmes locally and overseas, with the goal to help them respond to the engineering industry needs now and in the future.

CABE Presence at Graduation Ceremony of CityU SCOPE and Annual Luncheon of the Hong Kong College of Technology 

Both Richard and Jackie were honoured to attend in the graduation ceremony – organised by the campus of School of Continuing and Professional Education, City University of Hong Kong (CityU SCOPE) – to witness more than 70 students who had completed their Bachelor of Science (Hons) degrees in Construction Management or Quantity Surveying with the University of Wolverhampton (UW). They, accompanied by Mr. Kyran Sze, also attended the annual cocktail and luncheon at the Hong Kong College of Technology, during which they connected with many representatives from allied institutes of the engineering sectors. 

Throughout their management visit to Hong Kong, Richard and Jackie were pleased to discover that our committed CABE Hong Kong members share the same goal to drive professional standards and they continue to consolidate and deepen the exchange of ideas with their local engineering counterparts. 

Richard Harral will accompany CABE President Mr. Richard Smith on a Presidential visit to Asia Pacific Region in mid-April 2024 and look forward to meeting with members throughout the APAC region. 

On 15 January 2024, Mr. KC Lam represented CABE Macau Chapter to attend the 25th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Marble & Granite Merchants Assocation and witness the inauguration of the newly elected Council.

It's always an encouraging experience to share CABE membership routes with students in the built environment at different levels.

In a CABE Membership Briefing Session held on 18 December 2023, CABE Hong Kong Chair Kyran Sze and Asia Pacific Region General Manager Vivian Sie visited the Hong Kong Institute of Construction (HKIC), one of the CABE International Academic Partners in Hong Kong.  The following four HKIC programmes are accredited by CABE:

On 23 December 2023, CABE Members in Hong Kong enjoyed an enriching exchange of knowledge and insight at a MiC Mock-up and Full BIM Cave in Wanchai, Hong Kong, This CPD technical site visit aimed to give participants a taste of the MiC and BIM experience.

During the two-hour visit, our Members were given an opportunity to explore BIM workflows and its practical use, ranging from MiC design off-site fabrication, transportation, fitting out, MEP joint, facade, to waterproof treatment .  It was clear that the using digital technology to benchmark and quantify design decisions for ESG initiatives is a global trend.  CABE Members shared the same BIM aspirations to ensure that our built-environment development aligns with global sustainability standards.

CABE member Steve Coppin C.Build E FCABE was delighted to be asked to speak at the CIC Global Construction Sustainability Forum and Exhibition held in Hong Kong last month. This four-day event featured exhibitions, forum and technical visits exploring the theme of innovation, sustainability, and safety. 

Steve Coppin, Strategic Technical Director at SJU Risk Management Solutions Ltd delivered a presentation on Digital Engineering and designing for Safety explaining how you can improve safety performance by using ISO 19650.

One of the highlights of the conference were the discussions with HK CIC, Development Bureau Directors and officials which saw them debate how safety, sustainability methods and standards could prevent accidents and improve wellbeing. Further discussions explored how identifying and specifying sustainable materials, components, and products created greener buildings and reduced asset lifecycle costings.

A  host of experts from across the globe joined the speaker line-up including:

• Ms Bernadette Linn, Secretary for Development, Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Regions who delivered the opening remarks
• Ar. Donald Choi, Executive Director and Chief Executive Offer, Chinachem Group who investigated MiC and MiMEP and how it can be used to ensure sustainable construction
• Dr Goh Yang-miang, Associate Professor, College of Design and Engineering, National University of Singapore who discussed embracing construction safety in order to build a safer future; and

Overview of Steve’s Presentation

Two mega projects are current being planned in Hong Kong, the northern metropolis development and a number of artificial islands. These developments, along with other major projects, are creating a several billion dollar annual spend. 

The challenges of traditional vs digital methods of procurement, design & construction. replacement & removal of assets during the lifecycle and Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) are ongoing and can be addressed with digital technology.

To achieve sustainable procurement, you need to select the right people and training. Emphasis should be on the 4Ps – Procurement (setting the right standards), People (are they competent), Processes (systems) and Performance (measuring and sharing lessons learnt) – and the 9Cs Communication through to Culture.
