CABE Maintenance or Refurbishment Award 2020 – Presented by CABE Benevolent Fund

Winner: Onyx Solar for Restoration Essen Custom Warehouse

Category requirements: A winner of this Award demonstrates good practice and innovation in delivering maintenance or refurbishment to a building successfully, ready for the future.

Project: The time lapse of this refurbishment is a visual feast, watching the old-world leaping into the future, as the 1902 Flemish Neo-Renaissance transhipment station breathes new life with 758m2 of photovoltaic fins. This future-focused paragon of clean energy generates thermal and acoustic insulation as well as offsetting approximately 420 tons of CO2 and avoids 369 barrels of oil. It generates enough clean power to feed 1,230 light points every day.

Disused from 1975 and listed as a monument in 2003, Essen Custom Warehouse will live again as an adaptable venue for industrial science training courses. The amorphous silicon glass creates the perfect blend of aesthetics and functionality, which was of primary importance as it is part of the Interreg Flanders-Netherlands European project to investigate making monuments more sustainable. Onyx Solar launched an initiative to plant a tree for every square metre of PV glass, and so 758 trees were planted in the Amazon forest as part of the restoration of Essen Custom Warehouse.

Architect business manager, Mr. Álvaro Valverde, understood the project's needs from the beginning, considering both the active and the passive properties of this restoration, the photovoltaic fins would be a solution for the building that ensured a clean installation.

"This photovoltaic skylight installation leads the way for refurbishment monuments to be made more sustainable. For us, it is a real pleasure that our innovation is once again awarded in the CABE awards." – Álvaro Valverde
