Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE) wishes to pay tribute to the late Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) Director Vinayak Pradhan on his passing on 8 March 2020. He was a respected and honoured friend of our association.

CABE Malaysia Chapter remembers working closely with AIAC in organising CABE Malaysia Annual Conference 2019 & 2020 and the launching of the 2nd addition of the AIAC Standard Form of Contract under his stewardship.

"On a personal note he was always charming with great sense of humour. He also had a great love for the Sport of Cricket and History.”

He is survived by his wife, Varsha Pradhan, his two children, Avinash and Anisha, and his family.

Vinayak Pradhan was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1974, having graduated with a law degree with honours from the University of Singapore. He was also called to the Singapore Bar in 1991. He lead a distinguished career spanning 45 years with Malaysia’s top legal firm Skrine, as a Partner and Consultant before taking up the appointment as the Director of the AIAC on 21 November 2018 at the calling of the then Attorney General of Malaysia Tan Sri Tommy Thomas.

Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, described Vinayak Pradhan as the doyen of arbitration in Malaysia, as he was a lawyer who was recognised the world over for his ability, experience and leadership.

Vinayak Pradhan was a Chartered Arbitrator and the first Malaysian and Asian to serve on the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, United Kingdom as International President in 2013. He was fiercely proud of Malaysia and the Rule of Law. Vinayak was also the founding Chairman of CIArb Malaysia Branch. He actively supported the development of the next generation of arbitrators and generously shared his wealth of knowledge with the Young Members.

Vinayak Pradhan received the “Arbitrator of the Year” Award by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Malaysia branch) in 2016.

In his citation, the Chief Justice of Singapore, Mr Sundaresh Menon, then CIArb Patron, said:

“In the course of my career at the Bar, I acted as counsel in many arbitrations. I therefore have had the opportunity to appear before a fair number of arbitrators from many parts of the world. With the benefit of this perspective, I have no hesitation in saying that I personally rate Vinayak among the very finest of them.”

Vinayak Pradhan also distinguished himself Internationally  and held such appointments as a member of the United Nations Compensation Commission, and the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission, Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, The Hague, Arbitrator of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Lausanne, Arbitrator of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, Vice Chair of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, Panel of Conciliators and Arbitrators of the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, Council of Advisors of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre, Commissioner with the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission, Malaysia, International President, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (2013), Ad Hoc judge, 17th Asian Games, Incheon, South Korea (2014), ICC International Court of Arbitration.

He was a great friend and very generous with his knowledge and will be greatly missed.
