Construction Site Updates from CIC

Over the weekend, the BEIS Secretary of State, Alok Sharma MP reiterated that construction should continue.

CIC Chief Executive, Graham Watts, has reminded the industry that “this remains the formal line of the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) with the codicil that sites should operate in accordance with Public Health England instructions; without compromising health and safety; and in accordance with the Site Operating Procedures issued last week by the CLC.”

As it stands, many companies have chosen to temporarily close, and it was noted in the Industry Task Force meeting on Tuesday morning (31/03) that 10% of builders’ merchants have remained open across the nation, while the majority of housebuilders sites have now closed.

London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, believes strongly that all non-essential construction sites must be closed, while in Scotland, there are reports of construction workers being prevented by police from entering sites. Similar rumours have come from North-East and North-West of England. In response to this, the CLC has crafted a template letter for companies to issue to their workforce if they are required to travel. In addition, the CLC will be releasing guidance on construction which will be vital for the industry and generally expands on the list from the CIC.

Previously, we have reminded our community that in the current confusion and uncertainty, we implore companies who are keeping their sites open, to carry out risk assessments and follow the guidelines of the Public Health England and the Site Operating Procedures. If these guidelines and procedures cannot be met, then these sites must close as soon as is safely possible.

Below is a list of useful links put together by the CIC to aid clarity for the construction community.
