Course Overview

A full-day interactive training course for leaders of construction organisations to: understand the consequences and common root causes of error; identify personal actions to eliminate error within their organisation, projects and teams; and define group actions to improve processes and communication, to systematically eliminate error within the organisation and throughout the planning and delivery of construction projects.

Who are GIRI?

The Get It Right Initiative (GIRI) is an industry-led programme focused on reducing avoidable error in construction. It brings together clients, contractors, consultants, professional bodies and supply chains to improve quality, productivity, safety and sustainability by helping people “get it right first time”.

Its training has been developed with industry to tackle the root causes of errors, defects and rework, including planning, communication, coordination, supervision and quality culture.

GIRI estimates that avoidable error costs the UK construction sector around 10% to 25% of project cost, or £10 billion to £25 billion each year.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will develop the leadership knowledge, behaviours and practical techniques needed to reduce avoidable error across their organisation, projects and supply chain.

Understanding error in organisational leadership

Explain the cost of error to the construction industry, and the wider benefits of reducing error.
Recall the top root causes of error identified by GIRI research and relate these to their organisation’s projects.
Describe the role that leaders play in identifying and preventing error.
Quantify the potential benefits to their organisation of reducing error.

Leadership behaviours that reduce error

Explain the concept of helpful disagreement and identify how their behaviour can empower others to prevent error.
Explain the concepts of build it in your brain and press pause to avoid error, and how these concepts can be embedded within a team.
Explain the interface triangle, and how this can be used to pre-empt error.

Processes and error reduction

Assess their existing processes in terms of effectiveness of process, and implementation of process.
Identify practical measures to improve their processes, in order to reduce error.

Effective communication

Explain the six steps of communication and relate this to the communication of information on their projects.
Describe and use appropriate questioning techniques to eliminate error.

Pre-empting error on projects

Identify optimism bias and explain how this relates to construction.
Describe and use the 5 whys and pre-mortem techniques.
Recognise and use the concern, cause and countermeasure process to counter optimism bias on their projects.

Action planning

Participants will:

identify personal actions that they can take to reduce error in their organisation; and
agree a group action plan to counter optimism bias and prevent error in their organisation.

About this course

This course is provided using a GIRI Approved trainer, using presentations, an interactive Lego exercise, guided group discussion and small team workshops to explore the origins of error and practical tools to help eliminate errors at design interfaces.

The learning is formally assessed through the use of an end test.

All course places must be paid in full before the course date or your place may be cancelled.

If you cannot attend your booking, you must notify us in writing as soon as possible by emailing training@cbuilde.com. Provided that written notice is received no later than 14 days prior to the date of the course, we will be able to offer you either a full refund, a transfer onto another date, or you may nominate a substitute to attend the event in your absence.
