The Building Safety Act 2022 is the most significant piece of built environment
legislation since the introduction of the Building Act in 1984. 

 


This course will be held at CABE HQ, Northampton.  

 

6 CPD Hours Course Overview 

The Building Safety Act 2022 was introduced following the Grenfell Tower tragedy in 2017 and builds on recommendations from Dame Judith Hackitt’s independent review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety. The review identified serious failings across the design, construction and management of residential buildings and systemic failures in Building Regulations and their enforcement. This course summarises the root causes of the Grenfell Tower fire and explains how key measures in the Building Safety Act are intended to avoid safety failures in the future.

The course will help you to navigate through the Act and its supporting legislation; explain measures applicable to all building work (not just Higher-Risk Buildings (HRBs)) as well as the role of the Building Safety Regulator and explore the key features of new regimes for construction in HRBs, as well as their management in occupation.

 

 

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone involved in the procurement, design, construction or management of building work in any type of building.
 
This includes surveyors, engineers, building inspectors, designers, construction managers and professionals involved in management of HRBs. 
 
It will be of particular interest to building professionals with duty-holding responsibilities as a Principal Designer, Principal Contractor, Designer or Contractor who will benefit from understanding the wide-ranging change in liability and expectations imposed by the Act.

 

 

Aims & Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, you will understand:

  • the key problems the Building Safety Act is intended to address
  • the structure of the Building Safety Act, its supporting legislation and how to find your way to key information
  • the role and purpose of the Building Safety Regulator, its powers and duties
  • the main provisions of the Building Safety Act applicable to all building work including
    the duty-holding regime and expanded liability/enforcement powers  
  • the additional regime controlling building work in HRBs
  • the in-occupation regime for HRBs; and
  • changes flowing from the Act relevant to the manufacture, testing certification and marketing of construction products.

He has extensive experience in construction and regulation policy, and has helped shape UK building safety competence standards through senior roles on key industry groups, standards committees, the Competence Steering Group, and working groups for engineers, designers, architects, and building control professionals.

Hywel Davies OBE

Head of Technical Insight | CABE

Hywel is an independent expert in building safety regulation and performance, and Head of Technical Insight at CABE. His work focuses on Building Regulations and safety reform, construction product testing and regulation, and issues including ventilation, health risks, and net zero buildings. He has helped shape the new building safety regime, including leading the working group for recent CLC guidance on the Golden Thread, and has contributed to major reviews led by Dame Judith Hackitt and Morrell/Day.
