Shelley has over 25 years' experience in health and safety management and human factors across UK building construction, infrastructure and manufacturing. Shelley's experience 'onsite' is supported by extensive theoretical and academic knowledge, which integrate to make effective human factors solutions-focused approach to industry problems.

Following the previous Future Homes interim updates, changes to Approved Documents and Technical Handbooks and resulting building practices the eagerly anticipated and delayed 2026 updates are here.

What does this mean for the building sector moving forwards? Is enough being done to tackle poor indoor air quality and ventilation within the uplift and how could this be shaped in the future moving towards the ever present Net Zero targets.

Learning Objectives

Understanding of what the Future Homes Standard is, previous uplifts, the history and where this is heading in the UK.
Knowledge of the results of the 2023/2024 consultation in England, what’s happening with the other devolved nations and when these changes or documents are expected to be introduced.
Details surrounding Awaab’s Law and how this looks to change views on indoor air quality in the UK and future plans for this to be widened further (private landlords).
Future plans including a further Passivhaus consultation in Scotland and bridging the gap between 2026 and Net Zero.

Ruth is passionate for change within the built environment and enjoys speaking and writing about improving knowledge around regulations and best practice for both new build and retrofit properties. She is a product manager for the ventilation manufacturer EnviroVent and has expertise in ventilation, indoor air quality and incoming changes to building practices.
